Here's what we were working with - a backyard that had made it through a long Wisconsin winter and was ready for some attention. Debris scattered through the beds, no real definition between the lawn and the planting areas, and old matted-down material that just looked tired. It's the kind of yard that isn't bad - it just needed some work to get it back to looking sharp.

We started by clearing everything out. Old debris, dead material, anything that didn't belong. Once the beds were clean, we laid fresh plastic weed control underneath to help keep things manageable through the growing season. That step matters more than people think - skipping it means more pulling weeds by hand later on. We don't skip it.

From there, we installed new edging to draw clean lines between the lawn and the beds. That hard border is what keeps the mulch in place and gives the whole yard a structured, finished look. Then we topped everything off with fresh brown mulch - spread evenly across the beds around the patio, along the house, and around the trees in the yard.

The difference is hard to miss. Clean edges. Dark, fresh mulch. Beds that look intentional instead of forgotten. It's not a complicated job, but it's one of those things where the details add up fast. Getting the edging lines straight, keeping the mulch depth consistent, making sure nothing looks patchy - that's where the work actually is.

This kind of spring cleanup is one of the most cost-effective things you can do for your yard. It protects your plants, cuts down on weeds, and makes everything around your home look well-kept. If your beds are in a similar spot heading into the season, this is exactly the kind of work we do every day.
